{"id":574538,"date":"2026-04-28T04:27:26","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T18:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/musicfeeds.com.au\/?p=574538"},"modified":"2026-04-28T04:27:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T18:27:29","slug":"tones-and-i-reportedly-sued-by-ato-over-400k-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musicfeeds.com.au\/news\/tones-and-i-reportedly-sued-by-ato-over-400k-debt\/","title":{"rendered":"Tones And I Reportedly Sued By ATO Over $400K Debt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One of Australia\u2019s biggest pop exports is making headlines for something a little less chart-topping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/musicfeeds.com.au\/feeds\/tones-and-i\/\"><strong>Tones And I<\/strong> <\/a>&#8211; aka Toni Watson &#8211; is reportedly being sued by the Australian Taxation Office over an alleged debt of more than $400,000, according to court documents filed in Victoria\u2019s County Court on April 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-tones-and-i-dance-with-me\">TONES AND I &#8211; &#8216;DANCE WITH ME&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"--aspect-ratio:1.7777777777778;\" title=\"TONES AND I - DANCE WITH ME (OFFICIAL VIDEO)\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yQD6hl3H6B8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Per reports from <em>The Herald Sun<\/em> and Channel 7, the ATO is seeking to recover $432,797.27, with the amount tied to \u201cBAS provisions and administrative penalties\u201d &#8211; essentially tax obligations like GST and PAYG instalments. The documents also note that interest charges may continue to accrue daily on the outstanding amount. The case reportedly names both Watson and her company, Johnny Run Away Investments (yep, named after the song that started it all).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of writing, there\u2019s been no public response from Watson or her team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time her business dealings have landed in court, either. Back in 2023, her company was fined $20,000 over unauthorised building works on a Melbourne property, while her husband, Jason Bedford, was also fined over related permit issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, this all sits in stark contrast to Watson\u2019s meteoric rise &#8211; from Byron Bay busker to global superstar off the back of <em>\u2018Dance Monkey\u2019<\/em>, one of the biggest streaming hits of the decade. Her most recent album <em>Beautifully Ordinary<\/em> dropped in 2024 and debuted at #1 on the ARIA charts, proving her grip on the Aussie music scene is still very much intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, all eyes are on how this legal situation plays out &#8211; and whether one of Australia\u2019s most successful pop acts can resolve things without missing a beat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tones And I will also
