Following the dissolution of his former project, Harper Blynn, the songwriter and multi-instrumentalist got to work on his debut solo album, <em>Yay Blynn<\/em>, which surfaced in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blynn has subsequently relocated to Melbourne and adopted the name Dandelion Head. He&#8217;s also finished work on his second album, <em>Blue Dream<\/em>. Three singles have been released to date, including &#8216;Sad Eyes&#8217;, which is paired with a charming, lo-fi video from directors Lewis and Callum Mitchell (aka the Hotel Naomi) and Adrienne Couper Smith. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Dandelion Head &#8211; &#8216;Sad Eyes&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"--aspect-ratio:1.7777777777778;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1oqImo5qpFQ\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>In the lead up to <em>Blue Dream<\/em>, Dandelion Head tells us about the songs that make him sad, including classics from Lee Hazlewood and Gal Costa and songs Blynn co-wrote with Rose Elinor Dougall and Say Lou Lou. You can find all of Blynn&#8217;s selections in the playlist below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Songs to Make You Sad, by Dandelion Head<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<iframe style=\"--aspect-ratio:16\/9;border-radius:12px\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/7aWW5iKJ91N95NbyaXaV6w?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameBorder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-coco-empty-beach-2021\">Coco &#8211; &#8216;Empty Beach&#8217; (2021)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>J. Blynn: <\/strong>One of the best breakup songs ever for my money. The lyrics capture so perfectly that silence, the vast space and endless time in which you suddenly find yourself swimming when you split with someone. It\u2019s so lonely. When this song came out, <a href=\"https:\/\/musicfeeds.com.au\/feeds\/Coco\">Coco<\/a> was a bit of a secret, but I knew one of the band members \u2013Danny from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ilovelucius\/\">Lucius<\/a> \u2013 and I think that added to the feeling of intimacy and nostalgia the song gave me. It\u2019s effortlessly beautiful, and an absolute gut punch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">F.J. McMahon &#8211; &#8216;Early Blue&#8217; (1969)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blynn: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/musicfeeds.com.au\/feeds\/F-J-mcmahon\">F.J. McMahon<\/a> fought in Vietnam, and then made this record when he came home from the war. The whole album is a haunting kind of magic, but this gentle tune about not wanting to get out of bed just destroys me. It\u2019s so beautiful and sad, and then you realise that he is probably wrestling with some kind of PTSD, and it\u2019s just devastating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lee Hazlewood &#8211; &#8216;Wait and See&#8217; (1968)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blynn:<\/strong> The brilliance of this song is that the line, \u201cEverything\u2019s gonna be alright\u201d, is not what you think it is. This guy fucked up big time and he\u2019s apologising, so when he sings that refrain, I hear it as a mantra of hope sung to himself. There\u2019s so much desperation in it, maybe even delusion, because it\u2019s pretty clear things are very much not all right. But the music and beautiful arrangement tell me it\u2019s the good kind of hope, the kind that keeps us alive and moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rose Elinor Dougall &#8211; &#8216;That\u2019s Where The Trouble Started&#8217; (2019)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blynn:<\/strong> I wrote this song with <a href=\"https:\/\/musicfeeds.com.au\/feeds\/Rose-Elinor-Dougall\/\">Rose<\/a>, and it documents a friendship gone wrong over time based on one little lie, captured in the line, \u201ca lie lives a long life\u201d. The tragedy of that is massive, and the regret wrapped up in there is just so heartbreaking. A lie can be so damaging. It changes your behaviour, and maybe even yourself, because you have to act in accordance with it, lest you get caught. This song is a good argument for being honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gal Costa &#8211; &#8216;Como 2 E 2&#8217; (1972)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blynn:<\/strong> To me this is the legend <a href=\"https:\/\/musicfeeds.com.au\/feeds\/gal-costa\">Gal<\/a> at her most vulnerable, most raw. The lines that get me are, \u201cWhen I sing, don\u2019t believe it \/ Just come, I\u2019m not in danger\u201d. And then later, \u201cEverything is the same when I\u2019m singing and when I\u2019m silent.&#8221; She feels this pain, and the resignation in knowing there\u2019s nothing she can do about it is where the darkness and beauty is for me. She\u2019s laid bare. But she loves singing, and that\u2019s enough, she says later. The music and the sound of her voice tell the whole story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Say Lou Lou &#8211; &#8216;Waiting For A Boy&#8217; (2023)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blynn:<\/strong> When I wrote this song with <a href=\"https:\/\/musicfeeds.com.au\/feeds\/say-lou-lou\">Elektra and Miranda<\/a>, we explored their experiences of being with people who had a lot of growing up to do. While I see the song as ultimately empowering, the picture we painted is heartbreaking. It\u2019s someone waiting for their partner to change, tolerating mediocrity, stuck with the burden of the mundane, taking on an outsized chunk of keeping the relationship stable and moving forward, then finally realising you\u2019ve been languishing and this person won\u2019t change. These women are deep souls and they were able to articulate these things so powerfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mouth Tooth &#8211; &#8216;Please Don&#8217;t&#8217; (2020)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blynn:<\/strong> A sad banger from emo-folk kings <a href=\"https:\/\/musicfeeds.com.au\/feeds\/Mouth-Tooth\">Mouth Tooth<\/a>. I absolutely love this band. The music is so lush and atmospheric and invites you into a unique kind of melancholic beauty. \u201cPlease don\u2019t tell me I\u2019m bad \/ I\u2019m already so sad\u201d has to be one of the most raw, unabashedly sad lines I\u2019ve ever heard. It\u2019s a plea for giving you a goddamn break, born from utter desperation. \u201cMy life is about you\u201d conveys such earnestness that is deep and soulful, never trite, but just raw and fully committed, even if it\u2019s wrong and never gonna work out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sylvie &#8211; &#8216;Sylvie&#8217; (2022)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blynn:<\/strong> This is one of the best examples of music and vibe carrying the feeling of a song. The music tells you everything emotionally here. It\u2019s languid and melancholic, becoming almost a mantra when they sing, \u201cSylvie don\u2019t you cry\u201d. It takes me to a moment when painful memories begin to fade, and you\u2019re left in the still and quiet space of reflection, with all its loneliness and isolation. <a href=\"https:\/\/musicfeeds.com.au\/feeds\/Sylvie\">Sylvie<\/a> is so simple and effective in creating that feeling. I love this band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sibylle Baier &#8211; &#8216;The End&#8217; (2006)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blynn:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/musicfeeds.com.au\/feeds\/Sibylle-Baier\/\">Sibylle Baier&#8217;s<\/a> <em>Colour Green<\/em> is one of the most haunting and atmospheric records I\u2019ve ever heard. There\u2019s such a lonely, melancholic mood to all the songs, but this one is the gut punch for me. The lyric, \u201cTime is over where we could simply say I love you,\u201d is just devastating. Time passes. Love changes. Things that were once simple get complicated, and that\u2019s where the real work in a relationship happens. And a lot of times things just don\u2019t work out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It reminds me of the feeling when you break up with someone and all of the sudden, someone you adored, who made your heart skip and was the centre of your world, is just another person again.
