For the fourth time, David Guetta has been named the top DJ in the world, hitting the number one spot in DJ Mag‘s new poll. Last year, Guetta was pipped at the post by Martin Garrix. Guetta has released a delighted statement in response to the win, in which he highlights the joy of topping the poll for a different reason each time.

“It’s incredible,” Guetta said. “You know, the two previous times were probably thanks to Future Rave. This time is probably thanks to ‘I’m Good’ and those big crossover records. I love that I can express different feelings in different ways.”

David Guetta – ‘I’m Good’

‘I’m Good (Blue)’ was released in 2022, and featured the American singer Bebe Rexha – it later appeared on Rexha’s self-titled third studio album. The song had been in the bag for a long time before its official release, but it took a sudden moment of TikTok virality for Rexha and Guetta to release it as a stand-alone single. The song topped the charts in 22 countries, and its viral saturation is – as Guetta himself highlights – a big reason why the French DJ is back in the popular consciousness.

Other heavy hitters in the DJ Mag top ten include Garrix, Alok, Armin Van Buuren, as well as South Korean DJ and producer Peggy Gou, one of just two women in the top 20. Fred again.. made the list for the first time – at number 34.

The Killers are set to release a career-spanning retrospective, titled Rebel Diamonds, on Friday, 8th December. Rebel Diamonds will contain twenty tracks plucked from across the band’s two decade career. The collection will end with a brand new song, titled ‘Spirit’.

Mega-hits likes ‘Mr. Brightside’ and ‘When You Were Young’ will make appearances, along with at least one song from each of the group’s seven albums. The compilation’s title is taken from a lyric in the Sam’s Town track ‘Read My Mind’.

The Killers – ‘Mr. Brightside’

The album proceeds in chronological order, thereby displaying the evolution of the band. Rebel Diamonds is the group’s second greatest hits compilation, following on from 2013’s Direct Hits.

“See it’s been said that what’s remembered lives, and we’ve racked up stadiums full of memories the past twenty years, enough to fill lifetimes,” The Killers’ Brandon Flowers said in a statement. “Twenty songs for twenty years.”

Rebel Diamonds is coming out on Friday, 8th December, through Universal Music. The album can be pre-saved here.

Content Warning: This story contains discussion of sexual assault

Neil Portnow, the CEO of the Recording Academy from 2002 to 2019, is being sued for sexual assault. The plaintiff is a female musician who alleges Portnow drugged and raped her in 2018.

The Recording Academy is also involved in the suit. Per Pitchfork, the lawyer for the plaintiff has argued that the Academy “knew or should have known of … Portnow’s sexually assaultive behaviour towards women.”

Neil Portnow and the Recording Academy at the centre of sexual assault lawsuit

The plaintiff’s name has been kept private, but she has been revealed as an instrumentalist and journalist. She met Portnow in a hotel room, with the aim of interviewing him for her magazine. Portnow is alleged to have offered her wine, which, after she drank it, made her drowsy.

As she attempted to leave, she claims she felt as though she had no control of her body, at which point Portnow began “kissing and massaging her body.” The plaintiff then lost consciousness. Each time she awoke throughout the night, Portnow was allegedly sexually assaulting her.

After the alleged assault, the plaintiff contacted both Portnow and the Recording Academy. She also made a police report.

This allegation has been in the media since 2020, when Portnow’s replacement as CEO, Deborah Dugan, made a discrimination complaint. In the complaint, Dugan claimed that Portnow “allegedly raped a female recording artist, which was, upon information and belief, the real reason his contract was not renewed.” This, however, is the first time that details of the case have been made public.

UK band Pop Will Eat Itself are heading down under next year, with support provided by Jesus Jones. The alt-rock outfit’s greatest hits tour will visit Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth in late February and early March 2024.

Pop Will Eat Itself came to prominence in the mid 1980s. Their first record, Box Frenzy, won acclaim, but it took a few years before the band hit the mainstream. Their second album, 1989’s This Is the Day…This Is the Hour…This Is This!, is widely considered their best, and hit the number 24 slot in the UK albums chart.

Pop Will Eat Itself – ‘Ich Bin Ein Auslander’

The band have only toured Australia intermittently – their last tour was back in 2014, and that marked the first time they hit the country in almost two decades.

Support act Jesus Jones were another mainstay of the late ’80s and early ’90s alt-rock scene. The group are best known for their 1990 single ‘Right Here, Right Now’, which became an international success. Their 1989 debut album Liquidizer is generally regarded as their best, drawing on everything from techno pop to hip hop.

Both bands have indicated they’ll be playing their best known songs on the tour.

Cinema-lovers rejoice as Lorne Theatre, a “seaside gem” and one of the oldest theatres in Victoria, is being refurbished with plans to re-open in 2024. The theatre, situated on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, will now be run by the team behind Golden Age Cinema.

Golden Age will be known to Sydney film lovers for its easygoing vibe and carefully curated program of throwback classics and boundary-pushing new releases. It’s also a spot for intimate live music events.

Lorne Theatre to retain its classic charm under new operators

Under the new operators, Lorne Theatre, which first opened in 1937, will be shown a new lick of love. “Our plans for the building are not to reinvent the wheel, but to add some love and polish and restore the Lorne Theatre to its original splendour,” said the business’s new co-owner Chris Barton.

“We want to accentuate that same charm and sense of grandeur that has captivated visitors for more than 80 years and help ensure the theatre’s future as a truly special cultural experience into the future.”

The Lorne Theatre holds 550 seats. It’s a gorgeous art deco building right across the road from Lorne Beach and the Lorne-Queenscliff Coastal Reserve. The theatre will retain its classic charm under its new management.

“The vision has always been to provide an inclusive social experience that both recalls the classic cinema-going of yore but celebrates new voices too,” said the director of Golden Age’s programming, Kate Jinx.

Lorne Theatre is located at 76-80 Mountjoy Parade, Lorne, VIC.

The Wiggles have criticised the city of Bunbury, Western Australia, which was revealed earlier this week to have been playing ‘Hot Potato’ on loop to deter the assembly of people experiencing homelessness, who had set up a makeshift shelter in the city.

The Mayor of Bunbury denied that the song was being used for this purpose. Nonetheless, The Wiggles took the Mayor and the city to task in a statement. “The Wiggles’ music is created to bring joy and happiness to children and families around the world and we are deeply disappointed to hear that it is being used in any other way,” the band said.

The Wiggles – ‘Hot Potato’

According to reports, the song played on loop for two days. “We obviously don’t want to be causing any agony for people who are down there and enjoying that space,” the Mayor, Jaysen Miguel, said after the song had been turned off.

One report claimed that the controls for the speaker system were broken into, and the music was “turned right up.”

In any case, there is a strong precedent for music being used unfairly and cruelly as a deterrent. Earlier this year, it was reported that local businesses in LA were using classical music to move on people experiencing homelessness, while closer to the home, SBS has reported on the frequency of music being used in this manner.

“Someone playing music to stop them sleeping at a place where they feel safe doesn’t make a lot of sense to me,” said Evan Nunn, the chief executive of Accordwest, a homelessness support agency.

Cohen died in August of 2017, and has been memorialised with a series of covers, including Leah Senior taking on ‘Easy Come, Easy Go’ by Grant McLennan and Julia Jacklin putting her spin on ‘Shivers’ by the Boys Next Door.

Augie March and RVG – ‘Henry Lee’

“These recordings highlight unique Australian artists and are a continuation of Tony’s career supporting independent music,” says John Olson, the co-author of Half Deaf, Completely Mad, regarding the series of covers.

Cohen and Cave were frequent collaborators – the two first teamed up on releases from Cave’s punkish noisemakers, The Birthday Party. Cohen also worked with Paul Kelly, Frenzal Rhomb, Powderfinger and Augie March – the last album he ever produced was the latter’s 2018 LP, Bootikins.

Augie March and RVG’s cover of ‘Henry Lee’ sticks to the bare bones of the Bad Seeds’ original recording, with Glenn Richards and Romy Vager trading verses over the insistent, unsettling beat.

Californian throwback rockers Sun Room are heading to Australia for an extensive tour, beginning in late December and carrying through until the second half of January. They’ll be playing a mix of festival dates – they’re hitting Out & About in Perth, Spaced Out in Brisbane and Coastal Jam in Mornington – and solo headline shows.

Sun Room have been honing a sound that combines psychedelia, new wave, and surf rock over the past few years. They’ve dropped three EPs in quick succession, with their first, Sol De Sur, landing in 2020. Somewhere Tropical dropped in 2021 and the band’s latest, Outta Their Minds, came out in February 2023.

Sun Room — ‘At Least I Tried’

The upcoming tour is the band’s fist visit to Australia, but it’s the next logical step for them – they started out playing house parties, before stepping up into bigger venues. They even supported Louis Tomlinson, of One Direction fame, on the man’s 2022 North American tour.

If you’ve always dreamed of appearing on a Coldplay record, now’s your chance – the band have asked fans of the group to record themselves singing an extended note that will then be added to the track ‘One World’, which is expected to appear on the band’s forthcoming record, Moon Music.

This isn’t the first time that Coldplay have encouraged fans to get involved in their music. Back in 2014, the group abruptly took to the streets of Sydney (King Street, to be exact), to film a video for their song ‘A Sky Full Of Stars.’ That video, which is filled with fans of the band, was such a massive event that it temporarily shut down King Street – not an easy thing to do.

Coldplay — ‘A Sky Full Of Stars’

This new call to action was issued through the Coldplay website. “Hello everybody,” said the note, signed by band members Chris, Guy, Will and Jonny. “We hope you are all ok in these wild times. We have nearly finished Moon Music. If you’d like to be on it too, perhaps you could add your voice to a song called One World. (We would love that a lot.)”

The band continued, “All you have to do is record yourself singing ‘Ahhhhh’ for a few seconds at oneworld.coldplay.com. You can either copy the note on the site, or sing a G or C in any octave.”

Details of Moon Music are scant, but it’s expected to follow-up to Coldplay’s ninth album, Music of the Spheres, which came out in 2021. Chris Martin and co. will bring their Music of the Spheres world tour to Australia later this month for a couple of shows at Perth’s Optus Stadium. Both shows are sold out.

Kylie Minogue has today announced a remix album titled Extension (The Extended Mixes), which sees the songs from her most recent record, Tension, given extra room to breathe. Extension is released on Friday, 8th December, and a single has already been released, ‘Hold On To Now (Extended Mix)’.

Tension was something of a return to form for Minogue. Released in September of this year, it simplified her sound, bringing it back to its bare essentials and creating something eminently danceable.

Kylie Minogue – ‘Hold On To Now’

“I started this album with an open mind and a blank page,” Minogue said about the record at the time. “Unlike my last two albums, there wasn’t a ‘theme’, it was about finding the heart or the fun or the fantasy of that moment and always trying to service the song”

The biggest breakthrough of Tension was the lead single, ‘Padam Padam’, one of Minogue’s most commercially successful tracks in quite some time. When it debuted, it hit #39 on the ARIA Singles Chart, the highest that Minogue has sat on the list in over a decade. It’s been described as a sleeper hit, gaining traction through memes and word-of-mouth, rather than a big PR push.

Extension takes the tracks from the original record and, as the title implies, extends them, twisting the pre-existing tracks into longer, more nuanced dance hits. Get ready for the record’s 8th December release date by streaming the original, and why not dip into Minogue’s back catalogue while you’re there.

Impressed Recordings, Australia’s first mail-order-only vinyl brand, has today announced it’s first slate of new releases. Impressed Recordings plans to release ten albums per month. The aim is to create an evolving landscape of Australian music; to capture the indie bands and performers who make the country’s music scene what it is right now.

The first run of vinyl records comprises Alexander Gow‘s Dizzy Spell, UK musician Passenger’s All the Little Lights, Georgia Mulligan’s Nothing Wrong, Babe Rainbow’s Fresh As A Head of Lettuce and Mushroom, Royel OtisBar & Grill/Sofa Kings Double EP, Tasman Keith’s Mission Famous EP, LaneousNormal Music, Hungry Kids of Hungary’s Escapades, and Babitha’s Brighter Side of Blue.

Alexander Gow – ‘In The Grip of Something’

Impressed Recordings are online only, and their releases come in strictly limited quantities – they are only pressed once. Each vinyl record is accompanied by an essay, included in the liner notes, and unique colour variants.

Alexander Gow, one of the first musicians to be involved with Impressed Recordings, was chuffed with the partnership. “Independent artists’ budgets rarely account for vinyl production, the most tangible representation of a musician’s work,” Gow said. “To counter that, Impressed stepped in and collaborate with the artist to help them press and release a gorgeous product and avoid artistic compromise. It’s a passion project, much like the work of the artists they support.”

It’s a welcome change of pace for vinyl production in Australia. For years, the major labels have hogged vinyl production space, making it hard for indie labels to get a look in. That’s created something of a physical media drought — a real problem for musicians and fans alike, given how poorly the streaming services renumerate artists. Sign up to the Impressed Recordings mailing list, here.

Indie singer-songwriter and viral TikTok sensation Petey has announced an Australian tour, to go down in February 2024. Petey first came to fame for his bizarre, absurdist TikTok videos. Following in the tradition of anti-comedy heroes like Tim and Eric and Andy Kaufman, Petey’s videos featured the man playing multiple roles, speaking in a lilting, sing-song voice, and delivering rolling punchlines that rambled as much as they hit. They’re good stuff, basically.

But while Petey might be best known for these skits – he has over three million followers on TikTok – he’s also a surprisingly sincere, earnest singer-songwriter. His songs, chief among them ‘Family of Six’, released only a month ago, combine passionate vocals with rising and falling electro sonics.

Petey – ‘Family of Six’

Petey has released three albums in quick succession. He dropped the first two – Lean Into Life and Other Stuff – in 2021. His newest, the 12-song record USA, dropped this year. Petey’s forthcoming Australian tour will be his first time in this country. He’s playing pub and theatre venues in Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Sydney. Details below.

Petey 2024 Australian Tour

  • Saturday, 3rd February – Corner Hotel, Melbourne VIC
  • Sunday, 4th February – Freo.Social, Fremantle WA
  • Tuesday, 6th February – The Triffid, Brisbane QLD
  • Wednesday, 7th February – Factory Theatre, Sydney NSW
