Singer-songwriter James Reyne will head out on the road in 2024 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Australian Crawl’s first greatest hits collection, Crawl File. The album is officially being reissued this week by Universal Music, and contains the band’s most enduring hits, ‘Reckless’, ‘The Boys Light Up’, and ‘Errol’.

Reyne will bring a full band along for the ‘Crawl File’ tour, which will begin at Kingscliff Beach Hotel on Saturday, 6th January. The majority of the dates will take place along the east coast – including a set alongside Baby Animals in Coogee – with two shows also locked in for Adelaide. The final stop on the tour will be the Northcote Theatre on Saturday, 23rd March. See the full list of dates below.

  • UPDATE 28/11/23: More shows added to the Crawl File tour, which now stretches into July 2024. Details below.

Australian Crawl: ‘Reckless’

“It was all a long time ago,” Reyne said of his years fronting Australian Crawl. “And sometimes I feel like it was another person who lived that life. But I’m still making music and I’m still on the road. Australian Crawl was a great apprenticeship.”

Apart from the tour, Reyne has also been locked in to perform at the Broken Hill Mundi Mundi Bash in August. The singer spent a fair whack of 2023 on tour with Ella Hooper in support of their new version of classic track ‘Way Out West’ – although some of the dates were initially rescheduled due to Reyne breaking his ankle.

Reyne’s last full-length release was 2020’s Toon Town Lullaby – read the track-by-track here.

Kita Alexander has announced the details of her long-awaited debut album, due out on Friday, 22nd March 2024. The album is called Young In Love, and will feature a few tracks that we’ve already heard, including ‘Date Night’ (with Morgan Evans), ‘7 Minutes In Heaven’, and ‘Queen’.

The album was reportedly written in just one month in Alexander’s Byron Bay home, and will traverse territory like motherhood and the ups and downs of a relationship. “Finding yourself in your early 20s isn’t easy,” Alexander says of the record. “It’s hard, whichever path you take. But I feel like I’ve been able to come into myself whilst being in such a loving and beautiful relationship.”

Kita Alexander Releases New Single, Announces Tour

Alongside the album news, the pop singer has also dropped a brand new single from the record, titled ‘Best You Ever Hard’. As Alexander tells it, the song is an “encapsulation of impulsive thoughts”.

“When feelings throw you into fight or flight and you have irrational desires to say whatever comes to mind,” Alexander explains. “This song is unfiltered. Without use of my rational, logical brain. It’s cave-woman like, it’s self destructive, it’s everything I don’t like being. I don’t like fighting, I don’t like using anger and ego as a protective mechanism to stop me from being vulnerable. But sometimes it just comes out and that’s ok.”

You can listen to ‘Best You Ever Had’ here.

The singer will head out on tour in support of Young In Love in April next year, kicking things off on Friday, 12th April at the Rosemount Hotel in Perth and wrapping up in Canberra on Saturday, 27th April. Check out the full list of dates and ticket details below.

Melbourne favourites The Peep Tempel will reunite for one night only at OK Motels in 2024. The three-piece have spent six years on hiatus, hanging up the boots following the national tour for their third album Joy in 2017.

The band top a lineup that’s full of local talent, including alt-country group The Slingers, Brisbane’s Nice Biscuit, The Belair Lip Bombs, folk singer Watty Thompson, Polly and the Pockets, and more. See the full lineup and festival dates below.

The Peep Tempel: ‘Big Fish’

The members of Peep Tempel have kept busy in the years since they pressed pause: frontman Blake Scott released one of the best records of 2020 in Niscitam and has toured on and off since then.

OK Motels, one of the fastest-growing boutique events in the country, will take place in Charlton, Victoria, from Friday, 23rd to Sunday, 25th February. As usual, there are plenty of activities beyond the music, including friendship bingo, Devonshire tea, mini-golf, karaoke, barefoot bowls, pool parties, and more.

The brains behind the festival launched a companion event in October – titled Sound Tracks, it involved punters hopping on board a restored steam train for two nights, with performances taking place on the train and at the venues in Charlton.

OK Motels 2024 Lineup

  • The Peep Tempel
  • The Slingers
  • Nice Biscuit
  • Watty Thompson & The Total Fire Band
  • Belair Lip Bombs
  • Polly and The Pockets
  • Comets
  • DJ’s Queenie
  • Brat Paisley
  • The Clams (Water Ballet Squad)

June Jones has released a frothy new single called ‘Bubblegum’, the follow-up to July’s spiky pop track ‘Good Girl‘. It’s the second single Jones – now Sydney-based after many years in Naarm/Melbourne – has released via her new label Chapter Music, having inked a deal with them in July.

Jones has christened the new tracks her “desire era”. “’Bubblegum’ was the first song I wrote after moving to Sydney in March,” Jones says about the song. “Maybe the least emotionally heavy song I’ve put out, it’s the second release in a series that I am (possibly prematurely) calling my Desire Era.”

June Jones: ‘Bubblegum’

“This year, I have been finding a lot of potential for expression in the horny and romantic worlds of pop and dance music,” Jones continued. “I’ve been going out dancing a lot more both here in Sydney and when I was in London in August, and finding a sense of peace amongst the sweaty bodies of the girls and the gays.”

Jones’ last full-length record was 2022’s Pop Music For Normal Women, which followed the acclaimed Leafcutter, which arrived in 2021.

‘Good Girl’ announced Jones’ signing to Chapter in July. “I was listening to a lot of Charli XCX when I was making Good Girl,” Jones said at the time. “And I think my love for her music is what allowed me to write a chorus like this one, which leans into the part of me that does kinda just wanna be this hot femme object of queer desire.”

Beloved Brisbane outfit WAAX has announced its return, but not quite as you know it. Frontwoman and songwriter Maz DeVita announced on socials today that the band – which went on hiatus in mid-2023 – would be returning, but as purely her own solo project.

“I’ve been thinking of a million and one ways to say this but I have decided to continue after what has been an ~eventful~ year,” the singer wrote. “The WAAX community is who I am, and sometimes you need to take things away to get some perspective. Although we hold a lot of love, the boys are no longer continuing with me – life happens, being in a band is hard.”

WAAX to Return as Solo Project

“But the more I thought about it, this project has always been an evolution of my songwriting and it felt weird to walk away,” DeVita continued. “So here it is, the new WAAX era.”

WAAX will be playing a few shows towards the end of the year, including the just-announced Best Night Ever Festival on the Gold Coast, and two additional headline shows – scope out all the dates below. Following this, DeVita writes, she’ll decamp to Los Angeles for some writing sessions.

The band’s hiatus was announced in an emotional statement released in April. “This is the most fucked up thing I’ve ever had to write because I never thought it possible: WAAX as you know it is going on hiatus,” the band wrote on social media.

“All I ever wanted was to play gigs and make records – who knew shit could get so complicated,” an additional statement from frontwoman Maz DeVita read. “I love you all more than you know, for real, you’re the reason we did any of this and kept hanging on. Best Night Ever 2023 Trailer

WAAX frontwoman Maz DeVita announced today that the band would continue – but as her own solo project.

So here it is, the new WAAX era.”

Daniel Johns has inked a new publishing deal with BMG. The news was announced by the record label and publisher this morning, which noted that the deal covers not only Daniel Johns’ recent solo work, but from 2025 will include the entire Silverchair catalogue.

“There is nothing without a heartbeat that I value more than my songwriting catalogue,” Johns said in a statement. “Bringing my life’s work as a composer to BMG signifies the level of faith I have in this company and their people. From my compositions on Frogstomp to FutureNever and everything in between, my songs belong at BMG. I’m truly grateful to be in a position to sign the most important deal of my career with them.”

Inside The Mind of Daniel Johns

BMG has had a strong relationship with Johns over the years, including producing the recent podcast Who Is Daniel Johns, releasing the songwriter’s 2022 album FutureNever, and developing an exhibition based on his work that took over the Rialto in Melbourne. The relationship extends to the personal, as Johns’ brother Heath is the president of BMG Australia, New Zealand, and South-East Asia.

A two-part Silverchair documentary featuring Johns’ bandmates Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou recently aired on Australian Story, coinciding with the release of their memoir, Love & Pain. It wasn’t without controversy: the first episode was pulled from ABC streaming site iview due to “rights issues”.

Johns then released a statement clarifying his side of the story, saying that he hadn’t given approval to use certain Silverchair songs in the documentary, as he hadn’t been given a copy of the memoir by Gillies and Joannou.

“One particular use related to ‘Ana’s Song’ being featured as they discussed my battle with anorexia,” Johns explained in a statement. “I said to Sony and ABC that I would be open to approving all songs provided I received a copy of the book to ensure I wasn’t having my songs used to promote something I had no visibility on.”

“As always, I wish Ben & Chris nothing but success and happiness. I have never sought to block their book, I merely asked to receive a copy in advance to fact check it,” Johns continued. “I was concerned about my personal health records being discussed, I don’t think that’s unreasonable.”

The Amity Affliction have announced an extensive regional tour throughout January and February 2024. The Queensland heavy veterans will play 16 dates on the tour, which will kick off in Tamworth on Thursday, 4th January. The band will play shows throughout NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, and Queensland, and they’ll also stop by Adelaide.

The tour is another victory lap for the band in the wake of latest album Not Without My Ghosts, which arrived in May and reached #2 on the ARIA albums chart. The band just wrapped up a tour of major Australian cities, finishing up in Perth last week.

The Amity Affliction: ‘It’s Hell Down Here’

The Amity Affliction will be joined on the regional run by Tasmanian band Alpha Wolf – who recently announced the lineup for their curated festival CVLTFEST – and Melbourne hardcore act Terminal Sleep. See the full run of dates below; you can sign up for a Spotify pre-sale now.

Not Without My Ghosts mostly deals with the paradox of not wanting to be alive, and yet needing to stay here, while also mourning the loss of friends and trying to use the music as catharsis,” the band said about the album earlier this year.

Not Without My Ghosts follows 2020’s Everyone Loves You… Once You Leave Them.

SYNTHONY will bring its full show to the Sydney Opera House forecourt later this year. The long-running tour, which sees an orchestra reimagine dance classics with the help of DJs and vocalists, will land at the venue on Saturday, 9th December.

The show will lead audiences through songs by Eric Prydz, Avicii, Calvin Harris, Fatboy Slim, Tiësto, and – of course – Darude. SYNTHONY went on tour throughout Australia earlier this year – you can see their performance of Darude’s ‘Sandstorm’ at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne below.

SYNTHONY: ‘Sandstorm’ (Darude)

Local dance veterans The Bag Raiders have been named as the support act for the night.

If you happen to miss out on SYNTHONY, you’ll still have a chance to catch Ministry of Sound Classical when that heads out on tour later this year. The show has the same concept as SYNTHONY, and will play two shows in Perth in early December, followed by a gig in St Kilda on Saturday, 16th December.

SYNTHONY Sydney Opera House 2023

  • Saturday, 9th December – Sydney Opera House

Tickets are on sale Thursday, 2nd November via Live Nation.
